LULLABIES IN THE TREES
It's as if all the birds knew lullabies; they've
quieted to soft refrains right now, while to the west
the sun sinks orange and spent. They huddle deep
within the cradling catalpa trees and murmur
in their way to one other, barely audible, perhaps
exchanging reassurances that this summer day has been
laudable, the cool night is necessary and tomorrow
shall bring its new opportunities for birdsong.
